Hurricane Ike- Day 1- Wednesday 9-10-08

Today I found out after lunch that school would be cancelled on Friday due to Hurricane Ike. I was excited thinking that nothing big would come out of this and I would get a three day weekend. I came home and was excited, but then I got a phone call around 6 from Lori, my mentor. She told me that school would also be cancelled tomorrow (Thursday) as well because there were already voluntary evacuations in our area. That is when I realized that this thing could be pretty serious.

Our friends Matt and Amanda called us and asked us if we were thinking about evacuating. We said we thought about it but were not sure where we would go. Amanda invited us to go to Spring, Texas in north Houston with them to stay with her great uncle. We agreed to go along with them. They said they were planning on leaving around 10.

Nick and I rushed to go find something to eat, and came back and hurried to pack all of our stuff. We also had to make sure we had everything we would need.

We left around 10, dropped my car off with Brad and Linda who are some friends from church, and took off to drive north to Spring. We arrived there at midnight having been blessed to not have to fight any traffic.

We got our stuff organized at Larry and Ivy’s home and then went to bed. I was exhausted and so glad to get to sleep.
